No heat in Sioux City: the furnace will not start
When the thermostat is set above room temperature and the furnace does nothing, either the call for heat is not reaching the furnace, or the furnace tried to start, failed, and locked itself out. Most furnaces retry a few times and then stop until the fault is fixed.
Calls are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Two checks that take a minute
The thermostat. A blank screen or a low-battery warning means no call for heat is being sent. Fresh batteries settle it.
The switch and the door. A furnace has a service switch, often a light switch on or near the unit, and a safety switch under the front panel. If either is open, nothing runs.
Past those two, the fault is inside the furnace. Turning the power off and on clears a lockout but not its cause, so the furnace usually locks out again within the hour.
How long a house holds heat here
January lows at Sioux City Gateway Airport average about 10°F, and about 16 nights a year reach 0°F or colder (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). An older house loses heat quickly at those temperatures, and pipes on outside walls are the first to freeze. Space heaters buy time; they should stay clear of curtains and bedding.
What the visit usually finds
A technician follows the start-up order: inducer, pressure switch, ignitor, gas valve, flame sensor, limit switch. The step where it stops points to the part. A coated flame sensor, a cracked ignitor and a blocked vent all look the same from the hallway — nothing running — and they are three different repairs.
What to say when you call
- That there is no heat at all right now
- What the thermostat is set to and what it reads
- Any blinking code on the control board
- The year of the furnace and whether it runs on natural gas or propane
- Your town and ZIP code
Describe the problem and the age of the system. The operator checks who is taking calls near you.
